Atlas of Giving announced total giving to nonprofits rose 6.7 percent in 2012, an increase of $23.32 billion over 2011. But giving to religion, the long dominant charitable sector, saw continued erosion of its share of the national giving pie. As recently as 2002, religious giving accounted for over 50 percent of all charitable donations. By contrast, giving to religion accounted for just 35 percent of the 2012 total.
