Provision in fiscal cliff law provides limited window for direct charitable distributions

The so-called fiscal cliff law just passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama includes a little-publicized provision providing a short window of opportunity for eligible taxpayers to make direct charitable distributions from their IRAs in January and count them as made on Dec. 31.
